Design Systems
I've been building design systems since 2000 - before they were called 'design systems.' My approach has evolved from creating brand guidelines in CSS files on internal wikis to architecting full-scale enterprise systems on dedicated SaaS platforms like Sketch+ZeroHeight, Figma, Storybook.
These two design systems were created for companies in the heavily-regulated financial space and are two of my more recent.
- One company is a traditional full service B2C financial institution
- The other operates strictly in the B2B space
Research
I design for users. Not the arbitrary 'user' but the actual user—your customer who engages with your brand.
I gather primary data through analytics and formal qualitative and quantitative methods, through field research, even through eye-tracking—and then synthesize that data—increasingly with AI assistance.
AI accelerates research—surfacing patterns through well-crafted prompts. But real insights come from human synthesis. AI might flag that your CSAT scores are adequate, but it takes human judgment to understand why users abandon their carts despite rating their experience positively.
The goal isn't choosing between AI and human insight, but combining both for your specific users and business context.
